Designing a Home for your Lifestyle

Your home shouldn’t just house you, it should support your lifestyle today and in the future. We recently caught up with one of our clients, who said their home is working for them exactly as they’d hoped. This wasn’t just achieved through choosing the right interior pieces, it was built-in from the ground up.

Whilst everyone envisions the look of their dream home, have you visualised your daily life inside it? The layout of your home can make or break your daily experience living there. In the design of our client’s home, we created a space fit for their love for entertaining family and friends, featuring open social spaces balanced with cosier areas. Here are some things you should consider when developing your dream home.

Don't squeeze your lifestyle into a space that doesn't fit it.

What are your family routines? Do you need a dedicated space to work from home? What are your storage habits and do you want to change them? These are just some of the questions you might ask yourself when identifying which daily activities your home needs to accommodate.

Once you’ve considered the spaces you need, the question is how do you connect them? That’s where good design comes in. Architects look at requirements holistically, not just room-by-room, crafting the best possible flow through the house. They identify potential bottlenecks, determine which areas would suit open-plan or a defined space, and arrange indoor-outdoor flow.

When you know what you’re building, you need to know what it should be built with. This can make all the difference to the people living there currently or in future. Will this build be home to young children? Opt for materials that clean easily. Living with pets? Choose durable options. Design for you, not trends. Good designers will find the best way to combine style with function.

Putting thought into these foundations is incredibly important to how much you enjoy your home. Your careful consideration alongside working with a knowledgeable team can transform the success of your final result and avoid costly redesigns.
