The Old Post Office, Newcastle upon Tyne

A young recruitment company requested Monument Design & Build to provide a design service as well as construction services for the refurbishment of their city centre office, located on the top floor of The Old Post Office building in Newcastle.

The client’s brief was to create a modern and contemporary space which stood out from the crowd of other recruitment companies.

Monument provided their full design service, including interior architecture, interior design, build and electrical fit out. Where required, we sought input from our trusted partners who offered their expertise to our client seamlessly.

Architectural and interiors departments worked closely with the client to develop a bespoke bold contemporary interior which was unique to the company’s brand. Inspiration was taken from the companies bold and colourful branding, helping create a balance of old and new within The Old Post Office building.

The works were carried out just after the second lock down period so the programme was clearly delayed however with careful planning, safe methods of resource allocation and working the project was completed minimising as much disruption to the client as was feasibly possible.

A detailed construction programme helped manage the programme of works and also the client’s expectations regarding the move in date. The programme and progress were discussed with the client at regular intervals so as to minimise the impact that Covid had on the project.

Bespoke furniture and interesting spatial solutions created spaces for both work and socialisation with the aim of the refurb being that the staff were enthused to be at work as well as creating a productive and efficient work environment.

Significant spatial alterations were carried out in the removal of walls to create more open-plan workspaces, as a result active communication with the rest of the buildings tenants along with conservation consultants ensured works went to plan and the impact on the building was kept to a minimum. The conservation consultants advised on elements of the building which would be affected by the building being listed, which informed our decisions on what was to be altered in the design process.
