We were asked by Sir John Fitzgerald to provide building and shopfitting services as well as mechanical and electrical services for the refurbishment of their busy city centre café in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Design notes
With any city centre location, the health and safety aspects of the project are paramount. Our precise and detailed planning ensured impact to occupants was kept to a minimum and risks to the general public were either significantly reduced or completely eliminated.
Part of our stringent safety measures required deliveries and the movement of men and materials to be concentrated at off-peak times. As for any business, the reduction in downtime was critical and influenced the financial success of the refurbishment.
To achieve success in these demanding conditions, we ensured:
- Programme critical materials and furniture were stored at a third-party storage facility in the city centre so no downtime was incurred through late deliveries.
- Pre-manufactured items were preferred to reduce the amount of on-site fabrication.
- Detailed supervision of the works was provided so the programme was adhered to and where delays where incurred, they were rectified in good time.
- Good collaboration and communication with the client’s retail staff led to an effective handover process.
Of course, the absolute quality of the finished product was an essential requirement for the client. Monument worked very closely with the client’s interior designers so the completed project fully satisfied the client’s needs and aspirations.
